Queen – The Miracle 500-Piece Puzzle

Released on 22 May 1989, The Miracle is Queen's thirteenth studio album. It marked a period of renewed unity between Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, who decided for the first time to credit every song on the album collectively to Queen.

The album produced a run of singles including I Want It All, Breakthru, The Invisible Man, Scandal and The Miracle, and reached No. 1 in the UK.

Four Faces Becoming One Queen

The The Miracle sleeve was designed by Queen's art director Richard Gray, based on an idea by the band. The original photographs of the four musicians were taken by Simon Fowler.

Its concept is simple but striking: the faces of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon are gradually merged into one continuous face. The image directly reflects the spirit of the album, with four individual personalities working together as a single entity.

In 1989, however, this could not simply be created with a few clicks in Photoshop. The artwork was produced using the Quantel Paintbox, a highly sophisticated professional digital graphics system for its time. Paintbox operator Richard Baker created the seamless transformation between the four photographs.

Did you know? Brian May later explained that an effect like this would be easy to produce in Photoshop today, while the equipment used to create the original artwork effectively occupied an entire room. 💻

The idea continued on the back cover, where only the eyes of the four Queen members were combined into a strange repeating montage.

This 500-piece Queen puzzle reproduces one of the band's most unusual album covers and a striking example of pioneering digital image manipulation from the late 1980s.
