Queen – News of the World 500-Piece Puzzle
Released on 28 October 1977, News of the World is Queen's sixth studio album. It opens with a historic pairing: Brian May's We Will Rock You, immediately followed by Freddie Mercury's We Are the Champions.
The album also marked a musical shift for Queen. Following the elaborate production of A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races, the band deliberately adopted a more direct and stripped-back approach.
Frank Kelly Freas' Robot
The News of the World sleeve is one of the most extraordinary images in Queen's catalogue: a gigantic metallic robot holds the bodies of the band members in its hand.
Its story dates back to October 1953. American science-fiction illustrator Frank Kelly Freas created the cover of Astounding Science Fiction to accompany Tom Godwin's story The Gulf Between. The original image showed the robot holding the lifeless body of a single man.
Roger Taylor came up with the idea of turning the illustration into a Queen album cover. The band tracked down Frank Kelly Freas and asked him to adapt his own artwork. Freas agreed, replacing the man in the original painting with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. 🤖
The Story Continues Inside the Sleeve
Freas went beyond simply adapting his original painting. For the inside gatefold, he illustrated what happens next: the robot has torn open the auditorium and reaches inside with its enormous hand as terrified audience members attempt to escape.
Did you know? The News of the World robot eventually became a character in Queen's visual universe. Now commonly known as Frank, the robot has since appeared on stage and on numerous pieces of Queen merchandise.
This 500-piece Queen puzzle reproduces Frank Kelly Freas' famous artwork with its distinctive green, grey and red colour palette.
