Queen – A Day at the Races 500-Piece Puzzle

Released in December 1976, A Day at the Races is Queen's fifth studio album and the direct successor to A Night at the Opera. It includes Somebody to Love, Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, Tie Your Mother Down and Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together).

Like its predecessor, the album takes its title from a Marx Brothers film: A Day at the Races, released in 1937. The two records therefore form a natural pair, extending even to their visual identities.

The Famous Queen Crest Conceived by Freddie Mercury

The cover features the Queen Crest, originally conceived by Freddie Mercury, who had studied illustration and graphic design before Queen was formed. It combines the zodiac signs of all four band members around a large crowned letter “Q”. 👑

The two lions represent Roger Taylor and John Deacon, both Leos; the crab represents Brian May's Cancer sign; and the two fairies represent Virgo, Freddie Mercury's sign. A huge phoenix with outstretched wings rises above the entire crest.

For A Day at the Races, the concept was developed into a much more elaborate illustration by art director and illustrator David Costa. In contrast to the white background of A Night at the Opera, the crest appears here against a black background, strengthening the visual connection between the two albums.

The Original Artwork Still Exists

Did you know? David Costa's original artwork for the album cover survived for decades. Offered at auction in March 2022 together with preparatory drawings and the artwork for the credits panel, it eventually sold for £21,000.

This 500-piece Queen puzzle lets you reconstruct one of the most elaborate versions of the band's famous emblem. 🧩
