New Wave: the elegance of synth and poetic coldness
Born in the late 1970s in Europe and the US, new wave emerged as an elegant, arty reaction to punk. Less raw but just as non-conformist, it is defined by heavy use of synthesizers, drum machines, cold and melancholic atmospheres, and carefully styled visuals.
With pioneers like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Joy Division, and Simple Minds, new wave built a romantic, minimalistic, and often introspective aesthetic. Black suits, tousled hair, floating keyboards, and visually striking music videos became cultural codes that defined generations.
The style blends catchy pop melodies, dark tones, and electronic textures. Some bands leaned toward pop music (OMD, Yazoo), while others embraced post-punk (Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees).
