Queen Crown Logo: the band's royal name turned into an emblem

Official Queen Crown Logo iron-on patch – 11 × 6 cm

This official Queen iron-on patch features the band's name in elaborate red lettering against a dark blue background. The oversized Q forms the centrepiece of the design: its loop surrounds a royal crown, while its long sweeping tail extends beneath part of the logo.

Why is the band called Queen?

Before Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor played together in Smile. When Freddie Mercury joined them and the new band began taking shape in 1970, it was Mercury who proposed the name Queen.

The choice perfectly suited Mercury's taste for short, powerful and theatrical names. The word carried an obvious sense of grandeur, while Freddie Mercury also appreciated the different interpretations that could be attached to it.

The name ultimately prevailed despite the other members' initial reservations and became inseparable from the band's identity.

A visual identity built around royalty

The name Queen naturally provides an entire visual vocabulary of crowns, crests and elaborate ornamentation. That connection is particularly clear on this patch, where the crown is incorporated directly inside the Q.

It also recalls one of the band's most famous graphic creations, the Queen Crest, designed by Freddie Mercury himself using the artistic skills he developed while studying art and graphic design.

💡 Did you know?

Freddie Mercury was still Farrokh Bulsara when Queen began taking shape. He had already been using the first name Freddie for several years, but it was in the early 1970s that he also adopted Mercury as his stage surname. Within just a few years, the singer therefore helped shape both his own persona and the identity of Queen, including the band's name and visual world.
