Rolling Stones – Bridges to Babylon 500-Piece Puzzle

Released on 29 September 1997, Bridges to Babylon is the Rolling Stones' 21st British studio album. Following Voodoo Lounge, the band incorporated more contemporary production ideas, working with producers including Don Was and the Dust Brothers.

The album includes Anybody Seen My Baby?, Saint of Me and Out of Control, and gave its name to the spectacular Bridges to Babylon Tour.

A Lion Found at the British Museum

The Rolling Stones commissioned Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister to create the album's visual identity. Mick Jagger suggested that he explore the Assyrian collections at the British Museum in London for inspiration.

There, Sagmeister encountered the monumental creatures and lions of ancient Assyrian art. This led to the powerful lion standing on its hind legs that became the emblem of Bridges to Babylon. The final lion illustration was painted by artist Kevin Murphy. 🦁

The choice was not purely aesthetic. The image also had to work as a strong Rolling Stones emblem that could be adapted to the many different formats and merchandise produced for the accompanying tour.

Did you know? The first million copies of Bridges to Babylon were issued inside a specially manufactured filigree slipcase. Placed over the artwork, it made the Assyrian lion appear embedded within the intricate design.

The concept extended beyond the front cover. The desert landscape continued through the album booklet with ruins and monumental imagery that also influenced the visual identity of the subsequent tour.
