Rolling Stones – Steel Wheels 500-Piece Puzzle

Released in August 1989, Steel Wheels marked a major reunion for the Rolling Stones after several years of tension between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Three years after Dirty Work and their respective solo projects, the pair resumed their songwriting partnership and brought the band back together.

The album includes Mixed Emotions, Rock and a Hard Place and Almost Hear You Sigh. It was also the last Rolling Stones studio album recorded with bassist Bill Wyman, who had been a member of the band since 1962.

Mark Marek's “Steel Wheels”

The Steel Wheels cover artwork was created by American illustrator Mark Marek. Its black, white and grey design consists of repeating circular mechanical forms, interlocking across the entire image.

Rather than depicting one specific machine, Marek turned the title Steel Wheels into a dense, almost hypnotic graphic pattern. The shapes are similar enough to create repetition, while their orientation and details vary throughout the artwork.

That makes this artwork particularly well suited to a 500-piece puzzle: a restricted colour palette, large areas of black and white and numerous closely related patterns to distinguish from one another. 🧩

Did you know? The comeback extended far beyond the album. The Stones launched the huge Steel Wheels Tour across North America, followed by the Urban Jungle Tour in Europe in 1990. It was their first tour since 1982 and marked the band's return to large-scale touring.
