Queen – Absolute Greatest Flag: The Four Members Together

This Queen – Absolute Greatest flag features the artwork used for the band's 2009 retrospective compilation. Against a grey background, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon appear together in a black-and-white photograph beneath the Queen Absolute Greatest title.

The photograph itself is much older than the compilation, taking us back to Queen's early years and the famous sessions shot by photographer Mick Rock in 1974.

A Photograph from the Queen II Sessions

In 1974, Queen worked with Mick Rock on the visual identity of their second album, Queen II. Rock photographed the band in a series of black-and-white themed setups, including both dark and light-clothed compositions.

These sessions produced some of the defining photographs of early Queen. For the Queen II cover, Rock ultimately selected the famous portrait of the four members' faces against a black background, inspired by a photograph of Marlene Dietrich from the film Shanghai Express.

The image became closely associated with Queen and the band recreated the composition in 1975 for the opening sequence of the Bohemian Rhapsody promotional video.

Absolute Greatest: Queen's Career in 20 Tracks

Released in November 2009, Absolute Greatest features 20 tracks spanning almost four decades of Queen's career, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, Another One Bites the Dust, Radio Ga Ga, Don't Stop Me Now and The Show Must Go On.

The collection represents 13 of Queen's 15 studio albums, with only the debut album Queen and the Flash Gordon soundtrack absent from the track listing.

The artwork therefore creates an interesting link across the band's history: a photograph of the young Queen from the 1970s used more than three decades later to illustrate a compilation spanning their entire career.
