Queen Crest: the emblem designed by Freddie Mercury

Official Queen Crest iron-on patch – 11 × 10 cm

This official Queen iron-on patch reproduces the famous Queen Crest in a highly detailed black and white monochrome version. Surrounding a central crown are two lions, a crab and two fairies, while a large winged creature dominates the composition from above.

This elaborate imagery is not simply decorative: the emblem was designed by Freddie Mercury, with several of its elements directly representing the zodiac signs of Queen's four members.

Freddie Mercury: singer and graphic designer

Before becoming Queen's frontman, Freddie Mercury studied art and graphic design at Ealing Art College in London, graduating in 1969. His artistic background can be seen in the attention he paid to the band's visual identity from its earliest years.

Mercury created the Queen Crest, sometimes referred to as the “Queen's Royal Crest”, by bringing together the astrological signs of all four musicians within a single emblem. Its elaborate composition deliberately recalls the structure of a heraldic coat of arms.

Queen's four members hidden within the Crest

The two lions represent Roger Taylor and John Deacon, who were both born under the sign of Leo. Brian May, a Cancer, is represented by the crab positioned above the crown.

The two fairies are associated with Freddie Mercury's Virgo star sign. Together, these figures surround the central letter and crown, while a large winged figure spreads its wings across the top of the composition.

The result is particularly fitting for Queen: an instantly recognisable emblem built around personal references to the four members of the band.

An emblem from Queen's early years

The Crest formed part of Queen's visual identity from the band's early years. One of its most famous appearances can be found on the artwork for A Night at the Opera in 1975, where the emblem sits at the centre of the white cover design.

It consequently became one of the defining visual symbols associated with Queen alongside the band's wordmark.
