Sex Pistols – God Save the Queen: the monarchy through a punk lens

Official Sex Pistols sew-on patch – God Save the Queen – 10 × 10 cm

This official Sex Pistols God Save the Queen patch brings together three instantly recognisable symbols: a portrait of Elizabeth II, the Union Jack and the cut-and-paste lettering associated with the Sex Pistols' punk aesthetic. God Save the Queen covers the monarch's eyes while the Sex Pistols name runs across her mouth.

God Save the Queen: 1977 in full force

The Sex Pistols released God Save the Queen in May 1977, during Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. The song confronted royal imagery with the anger and nihilism of British punk at a time of considerable social tension in the UK.

The single quickly became one of the defining episodes in Sex Pistols history. Despite receiving very limited airplay from major British broadcasters, God Save the Queen officially reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Its Jubilee-era release and direct attack on the British establishment helped make it one of the defining punk singles of 1977.

Elizabeth II, the Union Jack and punk collage

This version of the artwork plays directly with British national imagery. A black-and-white portrait of Elizabeth II sits against a red, white and blue Union Jack, while the lettering appears as separate fragments pasted across her face.

The composition reflects a key principle of Sex Pistols imagery: taking familiar institutional symbols and disrupting them with deliberately raw typography. Here, the contrast is especially striking between the formal royal portrait and the punk treatment imposed across the Queen's face.

A square patch built around British punk iconography

At 10 × 10 cm, the patch provides enough space to reproduce the portrait, lettering and different sections of the British flag clearly. A black border frames the artwork and gives the design a strong finish on a jacket, bag or battle jacket.
