Sex Pistols – Portrait Montage Flag

This Sex Pistols flag brings together the four members of the band's iconic line-up: Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Paul Cook and Steve Jones. Their portraits appear in four yellow, white, purple and green frames against a black background, beneath the Sex Pistols name in black lettering on a red strip.

Johnny Rotten appears at the top left, with Sid Vicious to his right. Below them are drummer Paul Cook on the left and guitarist Steve Jones on the right. The photographic montage uses the bold colours and strong contrasts closely associated with late-1970s British punk imagery.

The Sex Pistols' Iconic 1977 Line-Up

The Sex Pistols formed in London in 1975. The line-up featured on this flag came together in February 1977 when Sid Vicious replaced bassist Glen Matlock, joining Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones and Paul Cook.

This was the line-up associated with the Sex Pistols at the height of the British punk explosion. In 1977 the band released God Save the Queen, Pretty Vacant, Holidays in the Sun and their only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols.

A Montage Rooted in British Punk Visual Culture

High-contrast portraits, blocks of yellow, purple and green, a red strip and a deliberately irregular composition give the design a visual language closely associated with the Sex Pistols and the punk movement of the period.
