This officially licensed Sex Pistols pencil case brings together several visual codes associated with the band: the Union Jack, a red, white and black palette and the Sex Pistols name assembled from mismatched cut-out style letters. A deliberately chaotic design rooted in the visual language of late-1970s British punk.

Union Jack and cut-out lettering

The British flag provides the background, heavily reworked with layers of red and black writing. At the centre, the Sex Pistols name appears in irregular lettering resembling characters cut out and assembled by hand.

This combination of altered British symbols, collage and mismatched typography became closely associated with the Sex Pistols' visual identity.

Jamie Reid and the Sex Pistols visual identity

Much of that identity was shaped by British graphic artist Jamie Reid. His work for the band used collage, cut-out lettering, altered photographs and symbols of the British establishment to create an instantly recognisable graphic language.

His artwork accompanied releases including God Save the Queen and Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols in 1977. These designs soon extended beyond record sleeves to become major references in punk graphic design.
