This official Sex Pistols God Save the Queen patch features the subverted portrait of Elizabeth II in a stark black-and-white design. The God Save the Queen title runs across the monarch's eyes while the Sex Pistols name covers her mouth: an image closely associated with the provocative visual language of British punk.

God Save the Queen: punk takes on the monarchy

Released in May 1977, during Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, God Save the Queen placed the Sex Pistols at the centre of a media storm. The song directly confronted the monarchy and British establishment with the anger of a generation growing up amid the social tensions of late-1970s Britain.

Despite receiving very limited airplay from major British broadcasters, the single officially reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. More than just another Sex Pistols song, God Save the Queen rapidly became one of the defining symbols of the 1977 punk explosion.

A royal portrait given the Sex Pistols treatment

The Sex Pistols' visual identity owes much to Jamie Reid, whose collages, cut-out lettering and subversion of institutional imagery helped define the visual language of British punk. His treatment of Elizabeth II around God Save the Queen became one of its most famous expressions.

This version strips the idea back even further: black, white, royal portrait and punk typography. Unlike versions incorporating the colours of the Union Jack, there are no bright colours here to distract from the face and lettering.

An oval alternative to the classic square patch

The 8 × 11 cm oval format follows the composition of the portrait and gives the patch an immediately distinctive silhouette. Its black edging naturally extends the monochrome artwork, while the iron-on backing allows heat application to compatible fabrics.
