A visual identity made to break the rules

The visual world of the Sex Pistols is inseparable from the British punk explosion of 1976-1977. While much of 1970s rock embraced increasingly elaborate artwork, their imagery went in the opposite direction, using collage, mismatched lettering, bold colours and graphics reminiscent of photocopied flyers and underground fanzines.

This aesthetic is particularly associated with Jamie Reid, the artist and designer behind several of the band's most famous visuals. Here there is no portrait, flag or illustration: the Sex Pistols name itself becomes the artwork.
