Dark Side of the Moon: the prism that became a Pink Floyd icon

Official Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon sew-on patch – 10 x 10 cm

This official Pink Floyd sew-on patch reworks the famous prism from The Dark Side of the Moon. Against a black background, a white beam passes through the triangular prism and emerges as a spectrum of colours, while the large PINK FLOYD logo dominates the foreground. The title The Dark Side of the Moon also appears across the lower section of the design.

Rather than simply reproducing the original 1973 album cover, the design reinterprets its central element by combining the prism with the band's name and a red, white and black circular composition.

How was the Dark Side of the Moon cover created?

When Pink Floyd were preparing The Dark Side of the Moon, the band once again turned to British design collective Hipgnosis, founded by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. This time, however, the band wanted to move away from the elaborate photographic imagery that had characterised some of their previous album covers.

The result was radically simple: a prism against a black background, struck by a beam of white light that emerges as a spectrum of colours. The final artwork was drawn by designer George Hardie for Hipgnosis.

Why a prism?

The concept was partly connected to Pink Floyd's interest in light and stage lighting. The dispersion of light through a prism provided a remarkably simple way of translating that idea into an image, while offering a clear departure from the more elaborate photographic covers previously created for the band.

Its simplicity became one of its greatest strengths: no portrait of the musicians, no scenery and not even the band's name on the front of the original sleeve. Just the prism, the beam of light and the colour spectrum.

An album released in 1973

Released in March 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's eighth studio album. Tracks including Time, Money and Us and Them form part of an album conceived as a coherent whole, exploring subjects such as time, money, the pressures of modern life and the human condition.

Its artwork became inseparable from the record itself: the Dark Side prism is now one of the most instantly recognisable graphic designs associated with Pink Floyd.
