The Dark Side of the Moon: the prism in its purest form
Official Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon iron-on patch – 7 x 7 cm
This official Pink Floyd iron-on patch features the image inseparably associated with The Dark Side of the Moon in a particularly stripped-down composition. Against the black background, a beam of white light enters a triangular prism before emerging as a spectrum of colours.
No band name or album title is needed: the design directly recalls the principle behind the famous The Dark Side of the Moon cover, an image that has become a visual signature of Pink Floyd in its own right.
An album conceived as a continuous journey
Released in March 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's eighth studio album. More than a simple collection of individual songs, the record was conceived as a whole: tracks flow into one another through transitions, sound effects and recurring elements.
A heartbeat notably frames the album, while clocks, cash registers, voices and other sounds become part of its construction. Time, Money, Us and Them and Brain Damage therefore form parts of a work designed to be experienced as a complete album.
Pink Floyd and Alan Parsons at Abbey Road
The album was recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, with Alan Parsons as engineer. Pink Floyd exploited the studio's possibilities through extensive layering, effects and experimentation, including the use of EMS synthesisers.
One of the best-known examples is the introduction to Money: a rhythmic loop assembled from money-related sounds precedes the arrival of the instruments. Time, by contrast, opens with the striking accumulation of ringing clocks and alarms.
Voices recorded at Abbey Road
The spoken voices heard throughout the album were not fictional characters written to tell a conventional story. Roger Waters prepared a series of questions which were put to various people who happened to be at Abbey Road.
Fragments of their answers were then incorporated into the record, contributing to its reflections on time, money, death, conflict and madness. The technique helps create The Dark Side of the Moon's distinctive continuity between music, sound and spoken words.
💡 Did you know?
Among the voices heard on the album is Gerry O'Driscoll, a doorman at Abbey Road Studios. His voice can notably be heard at the very end of the record, shortly before the heartbeat gradually fades away.
