The Dark Side of the Moon: the 1973 album

Pink Floyd's eighth studio album, The Dark Side of the Moon, was released in March 1973 after the band had developed and performed the material live for several months before completing the final recording.

Recorded at EMI Studios at Abbey Road in London, the album includes Time, Money, Us and Them, Brain Damage and Eclipse. It became Pink Floyd's greatest commercial success and one of the best-selling albums in music history.

The story behind Pink Floyd's famous prism

The Dark Side of the Moon sleeve was conceived by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis and drawn by George Hardie.

During the final album sessions at Abbey Road, keyboardist Richard Wright asked Hipgnosis to move away from their usual surreal imagery and create something simpler and more graphic.

The idea emerged when Aubrey Powell was looking through a physics textbook and came across an illustration showing light creating a rainbow effect. Storm Thorgerson immediately recognised the potential of the concept: the famous Dark Side of the Moon prism was born. 🌈

George Hardie then produced the final drawing: a white beam entering a prism and separating into different colours. The remarkably simple composition became inseparable from Pink Floyd and the visual identity of the album.
