This Pink Floyd – The Wall flag features one of the most striking images from the visual world created around the famous 1979 double album. Pink appears screaming above the Marching Hammers, shown advancing in formation and perspective beneath a blue and red sky.

From The Wall album to the 1982 film

Released in November 1979, The Wall centres on Pink, a rock star who gradually isolates himself from the outside world behind a metaphorical wall. The traumatic events and experiences throughout his life become the “bricks” from which his wall is built.

The album soon expanded beyond the record itself. Pink Floyd brought The Wall to the stage from 1980 with an ambitious live production, followed in 1982 by Pink Floyd – The Wall, directed by Alan Parker and starring Bob Geldof as Pink.

The film combines live-action sequences with animation, giving a major role to the distinctive visual world created by Gerald Scarfe.

Gerald Scarfe and the Marching Hammers

British illustrator Gerald Scarfe played a central role in the visual identity of The Wall. Working from Roger Waters' concept, he created characters and animations used across the album, live performances and film.

His creations include Pink, the Teacher, Mother, the Wife, the Judge and the famous crossed Hammers. In the Marching Hammers sequence, the hammers march together in formation, transformed into a uniform mechanical army.

The imagery became one of the defining visual signatures of The Wall. This flag brings together the screaming Pink and the Marching Hammers, two elements closely associated with Gerald Scarfe's visual world for Pink Floyd.
