Ensiferum: the warrior behind the band’s name ⚔️

Official Ensiferum Warrior sew-on patch – 8 × 10 cm

This official Ensiferum sew-on patch features a helmeted warrior in front of a circular shield, with an axe on the left and a sword on the right. The Ensiferum name appears above the design in white against a black background.

Ensiferum means “sword bearer”

Founded in Helsinki in 1995, Ensiferum took its name from the Latin word ensiferum, meaning “sword bearer” or “sword-bearing”. The name therefore predates the warrior imagery that later became closely associated with the band.

A logo established with the Hero in a Dream demo

The Ensiferum logo used across the band’s releases was designed by Tuomas Tahvanainen for their third demo, Hero in a Dream, recorded in 1999. Tahvanainen had already designed the logos for the first two demos, but this new version became the one carried forward into the band’s official discography.

From the demo to the debut album

Hero in a Dream proved crucial to Ensiferum’s early development: the demo attracted the attention of Spinefarm Records and led towards the band’s record deal. Their self-titled debut album was recorded the following year and released in 2001.
