Once, a Landmark Nightwish Album

With Once, Nightwish pushed the combination of metal and orchestral music further than ever before. The band notably worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra during the recording, adding a new scale to Tuomas Holopainen's compositions.

The album also features Creek Mary's Blood, Dark Chest of Wonders and the monumental Ghost Love Score, a track lasting over ten minutes that has since become one of the best-known compositions in the Nightwish catalogue.

The Angel of Grief Cover

The Once cover is directly inspired by the Angel of Grief, a sculpture created in 1894 by American artist William Wetmore Story. It depicts an angel collapsed over a funerary monument, its wings hanging down and its face hidden.

Did you know? The sculpture actually exists. William Wetmore Story created it for the grave of his wife Emelyn at the Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome. Following his own death in 1895, Story was buried there as well. 🕊️
