Ensiferum Flag – Viking Helmet & Shield

A blood-stained warrior helmet set against a large round wooden shield: this Ensiferum flag draws directly on the martial imagery associated with the Finnish band. Against the black background, Ensiferum's metallic logo also features red marks echoing those on the helmet.

Ensiferum: the “Sword Bearer”

Founded in Helsinki in 1995 by guitarist Markus Toivonen, Ensiferum became one of Finland's major folk metal bands. Its name comes from the Latin Ensiferum, meaning “sword bearer” or “sword-bearing”.

The name already captures much of the band's universe, where battles, warriors, legends and heroic tales feature prominently in both the lyrics and imagery.

Melodic metal meets Finnish folk traditions

Ensiferum combines metal guitars and vocals with folk melodies and traditional instrumentation. Throughout its discography, the band has notably used the kantele, a traditional Finnish instrument, alongside flutes, mandolin, nyckelharpa and other acoustic instruments.

This combination of Finnish folk influences, melodic death metal and epic melodies explains the band's strong association with both folk metal and Viking metal.

Markus Toivonen reportedly discovered the word Ensiferum while looking through a Latin dictionary as he searched for a name for the new band. Its meaning – “sword bearer” – fitted the musical world he wanted to create so well that the name stuck.
