Behind this emblem lies a fascinating story: Arturo Vega created the Ramones logo by transforming one of the most official symbols of the United States.

Why Does the Ramones Logo Resemble the US Presidential Seal?

Arturo Vega, a close friend and art director of the Ramones, conceived the logo after a visit to Washington D.C. in the 1970s. Seeing the Ramones as an essentially American band, he used the Seal of the President of the United States as his starting point and altered several of its elements.

The arrows held by the original eagle were replaced with a baseball bat, a reference to Johnny Ramone's love of baseball. The olive branch became an apple tree branch, reflecting Vega's view of the Ramones as being as American as apple pie.

The eagle's shield and surrounding lettering were also modified, with the names of the band members replacing the official wording around the eagle on the classic Ramones crest.

“Hey Ho Let's Go”: From Blitzkrieg Bop to the Ramones Logo

The banner held by the eagle originally featured the words “Look Out Below”. Vega later replaced them with “Hey Ho Let's Go”, the famous opening chant from Blitzkrieg Bop, the Ramones' debut single released in 1976.

The phrase became inseparable from the band itself. Here it appears as part of a distinctive variation of the emblem featuring the words “They Laid Down the Law” and four stars positioned in the corners of the flag.
