This official Ramones iron-on patch features the four band members in black and white, topped by RAMONES in bold magenta lettering. Leather jackets, jeans, long hair and a stripped-down attitude: the image brings together the visual codes immediately associated with the New York punk pioneers.

Four musicians, one instantly recognisable identity

When the Ramones emerged from the New York scene in the mid-1970s, their identity was not defined by music alone. Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy Ramone adopted a deliberately simple and consistent appearance: leather jackets, jeans, sneakers and similar hairstyles.

That uniformity became a signature in its own right. At a time when 1970s rock could involve elaborate costumes and spectacular stage productions, the Ramones presented something far more direct, perfectly matched to their short, fast and stripped-down songs.

From New York to the first Ramones album

Formed in New York in 1974, the band quickly became associated with CBGB, the Bowery club at the heart of a new scene that also included acts such as Television, Patti Smith and Blondie.

In 1976, the band released its debut album, Ramones. Its cover photograph by Roberta Bayley, showing the four musicians standing against a brick wall, helped establish a visual identity that would become synonymous with both the Ramones and punk rock itself.

A patch focused on the four Ramones

There is no Presidential Seal or illustrated artwork here: the design puts the band itself centre stage. The monochrome photograph contrasts sharply with the magenta RAMONES lettering running across the top of the patch.

Its 10 × 10 cm square format gives the artwork plenty of presence on a jacket, bag or battle jacket, while the iron-on backing allows it to be heat applied.
