This Metallica – Ride the Lightning flag features the artwork from the band's second studio album, released on 27 July 1984.

The electric chair directly refers to the title track Ride the Lightning, whose lyrics are written from the perspective of a condemned prisoner awaiting execution in the electric chair.

The American expression ride the lightning was itself a euphemism for execution by electrocution. Kirk Hammett reportedly suggested the title after encountering the expression in Stephen King's novel The Stand.

The cover turns that idea into a remarkably simple image: an empty electric chair, lightning and the electric-blue colour scheme that became closely associated with the album. ⚡

Metallica in 1984

Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen with producer Flemming Rasmussen, Ride the Lightning marked a major musical progression from Kill 'Em All.

The album includes For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Creeping Death and the instrumental The Call of Ktulu. It was also the first Metallica album to feature Kirk Hammett among the songwriting credits.
