Official Metallica Master of Puppets sew-on patch – 10 × 10 cm

This official Metallica sew-on patch features the artwork from Master of Puppets, the band's third studio album, released in 1986. Rows of white crosses rise from a field beneath a red-orange sky, while strings descend from puppeteer's hands visible at the top of the image.

The Metallica logo dominates the composition, with the Master of Puppets title appearing along the bottom. An instantly recognisable reproduction of one of the defining covers in the band's discography.

Master of Puppets, Metallica in 1986

Released on 3 March 1986, Master of Puppets was Metallica's third album and the last recorded with bassist Cliff Burton, who died only months later in the band's tour bus accident in Sweden.

The album includes Battery, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Disposable Heroes and the instrumental Orion. It has become a landmark in the history of both Metallica and thrash metal.

An album cover built around control and manipulation

The cover concept is credited to Metallica and their manager Peter Mensch and was brought to life by American illustrator Don Brautigam.

The white crosses are connected by strings to the hands looming above them, effectively turning the graves into puppets. The image therefore directly extends one of the central themes of Master of Puppets: loss of control and the forces that manipulate human beings.

This idea runs through several songs on the album in different forms, from addiction in the title track to warfare and the sacrifice of soldiers in Disposable Heroes.

💡 Did you know?

The Master of Puppets artwork was not created digitally: Don Brautigam painted the original cover artwork by hand. The original painting was sold at auction in 2008 for $28,000, more than two decades after the album's release.
