Official Metallica Master of Puppets iron-on patch – 10 × 9 cm

This official Metallica iron-on patch reworks one of the most powerful elements from the Master of Puppets artwork. Against a black background, the Metallica logo and a large green cross are connected by strings controlled by a pair of puppeteer's hands. The Master of Puppets title appears above the band's logo.

Rather than reproducing the complete album cover, this design extracts its central idea and adapts it into a 10 × 9 cm cut-out shape. The green embroidery against the black background gives the design a particularly graphic appearance.

Who is the “Master of Puppets”?

Released in 1986, Master of Puppets explores throughout several of its songs the idea of individuals whose choices and fate are controlled by forces beyond them.

The title track expresses this directly through addiction and loss of control. The “master of puppets” is therefore more than simply a character: the puppeteer becomes a metaphor for whatever ultimately takes control of the individual.

Puppet strings that became inseparable from the album

The concept already appears on the famous cover painted by Don Brautigam from an idea credited to Metallica and their manager Peter Mensch: rows of white crosses are connected by strings to the hands looming above them.

This patch takes the idea even further by removing the landscape and rows of graves from the original artwork. What remains are the cross, the strings and the puppeteer's hands, concentrating the design on the central theme of Master of Puppets.

The theme of control is not limited to the song Master of Puppets. It runs through the album in different forms, including addiction, manipulation, violence and the sacrifice of soldiers in Disposable Heroes. This connection between the music, lyrics, title and artwork helped give the album its exceptionally strong identity.
