Opeth's iconic logo in black and gold
Official Opeth Logo sew-on patch – 10 × 8 cm
This official Opeth sew-on patch features one of progressive metal's most recognisable logos. Against a black background, the Opeth name appears in gold, dominated by its spectacular ornamental “O” with long curves and plant-like flourishes.
The black and gold contrast and intricate lettering give this patch an identity far removed from the angular logos traditionally associated with metal. It is an instantly recognisable design for followers of the Swedish band.
A logo designed by Timo Ketola
This distinctive logotype was created by Finnish artist Timo Ketola. His work is officially credited as the Opeth logo on Still Life, released in 1999, while the album artwork itself was designed by Travis Smith.
The design is particularly distinguished by its enormous letter “O”, constructed almost like an illustration in its own right: curved lines, intricate flourishes and plant-like elements wind around the letter before flowing into the rest of the band's name. This elaborate aesthetic became an enduring part of Opeth's visual identity.
Opeth: between death metal and progressive rock
Formed in Stockholm in 1990, Opeth developed a sound that has always resisted simple classification. Led by Mikael Åkerfeldt, the band brought death metal passages, acoustic guitars, clean vocals, extended progressive structures and dramatic shifts in atmosphere into the same compositions.
Albums including Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Ghost Reveries particularly illustrate the era in which extreme metal and progressive elements coexisted within the band's music. Beginning with Heritage in 2011, Opeth gradually left its death metal elements behind to explore progressive rock and 1970s influences more openly.
💡 Did you know?
The logo now closely associated with Opeth was not the band's first logo. Opeth used several different logotypes during its early years before adopting Timo Ketola's design. It subsequently became so closely identified with the band that it remained part of Opeth's visual identity despite the major evolution of their music.
