Led Zeppelin – the Swan Song Records emblem

This Led Zeppelin - Swan Song flag features one of the images most closely associated with the band: a winged human figure with raised arms against a red sun, accompanied by the classic Led Zeppelin lettering.

The figure was originally the emblem of Swan Song Records, the label founded by Led Zeppelin in 1974. The band had completed its five-year contract with Atlantic Records and wanted its own label, notably providing a platform for other artists.

From William Rimmer to Led Zeppelin

The famous winged figure did not originate in the 1970s. The Swan Song logo, designed by Hipgnosis and illustrated by Joe Petagno, was inspired by a work by American painter and sculptor William Rimmer entitled Evening (The Fall of Day), created in the 19th century.

With its winged human figure and dramatic movement, the adaptation became the visual identity of Swan Song and appeared on the label's records. It remains instantly associated with Led Zeppelin today. 🤘

More than just Led Zeppelin's label

Swan Song was not created solely to release Led Zeppelin records. Its catalogue also included artists such as Bad Company, The Pretty Things, Maggie Bell, Dave Edmunds and Sad Café, as well as later solo releases by Led Zeppelin members.

The label ceased regular operations in 1983, a few years after Led Zeppelin disbanded. Its emblem, however, survived to become one of the defining images associated with the band's history.
