Led Zeppelin and the Starship: rock takes flight

This Led Zeppelin - Airplane flag features a famous photograph of the four band members standing in front of the Starship: from left to right, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Behind them, the Led Zeppelin name can clearly be seen on the aircraft's fuselage.

The Starship was a Boeing 720 converted into a dedicated touring aircraft. Led Zeppelin chartered it during the second leg of their 1973 US tour and again for their 1975 North American tour. ✈️

A flying tour bus

Inside, the Boeing looked very different from a conventional passenger jet. Many of the original rows of seats had been replaced by a bar, a huge sofa, lounge chairs, televisions, a bedroom and even a shower. It allowed the band to remain based in major cities and fly to and from individual concert dates.

The Starship became one of the symbols of the extravagant rock tours of the 1970s. Led Zeppelin were not its only famous passengers: the aircraft was also used by Elton John, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones and The Allman Brothers Band.
