Atom Heart Mother is the fifth studio album by Pink Floyd, released in 1970. Its cover became one of the most unusual images in the band's catalogue: a cow photographed standing in a field, with no elaborate staging. 🐄

This 500-piece Pink Floyd puzzle recreates the famous photograph taken by Storm Thorgerson for Hipgnosis.

An Album Cover Designed Not to Look Like a Rock Album

At a time when album covers were filled with artist portraits and psychedelic imagery, Pink Floyd and Hipgnosis took the opposite approach. The idea was to create an image with no obvious connection to the band or its music.

The original UK cover therefore featured neither the Pink Floyd name nor the album title: just a cow standing in a field. The radical simplicity helped make Atom Heart Mother one of the band's most instantly recognisable covers.

Meet Lulubelle III

The cow on the cover was neither an illustration nor a photomontage. Storm Thorgerson travelled into the English countryside to photograph a real cow.

Did you know? Her name was Lulubelle III. Thorgerson reportedly asked the farmer which of his cows was the most photogenic before taking the picture. A portrait of an otherwise ordinary farm animal consequently became one of the best-known images associated with Pink Floyd.

The album itself is also notable for the lengthy Atom Heart Mother suite, recorded with orchestra and choir, alongside tracks including If, Summer '68 and Fat Old Sun.
