Iron Maiden Flag – Fear of the Dark
This Iron Maiden – Fear of the Dark flag reproduces the famous cover of the band's ninth studio album, released in 1992. In a moonlit woodland, Eddie appears as a monstrous creature fused with a tree, ready to emerge from the darkness.
Dominated by the blue of the night, the artwork is topped by the yellow Iron Maiden logo and features the original Fear of the Dark title lettering.
Fear of the Dark: Iron Maiden in 1992
Released on 11 May 1992, Fear of the Dark is Iron Maiden's ninth studio album. It includes Be Quick or Be Dead, From Here to Eternity, Afraid to Shoot Strangers and, of course, Fear of the Dark, which went on to become one of the band's major live staples.
The album also marked a change in the studio: Steve Harris co-produced an Iron Maiden album for the first time, alongside Martin Birch. It was also Birch's final album as producer before his retirement.
Melvyn Grant's first Iron Maiden album cover
Fear of the Dark marked a major change in the band's visual history: for the first time, an Iron Maiden studio album cover was not created by Derek Riggs. Instead, the artwork was painted by British illustrator Melvyn Grant, who would later work with the band several more times.
Grant wanted to move away from bloody depictions of Eddie and create something more psychological: a woodland that appears peaceful under the full moon until you realise that Eddie is actually part of the tree.
Did you know?
The painting even contains a deliberate visual ambiguity. According to Melvyn Grant, Eddie's body can be interpreted in two different ways: sitting and fused with the tree, or descending along its trunk. Part of what appears to be his body could therefore belong to another creature. 🌕
This visual trick reinforces Grant's original idea: creating fear without relying on blood or explicit violence.
