Iron Maiden Flag – A Matter of Life and Death

This Iron Maiden – A Matter of Life and Death flag features an emblem taken directly from the artwork of the band's fourteenth studio album: Eddie's face wearing a military helmet above two crossed rifles.

The monochrome white design on a black background reproduces the symbol seen on the tank at the centre of the album cover and also used on the back of the record. A stripped-down version of the military imagery developed around A Matter of Life and Death.

A Matter of Life and Death: Iron Maiden in 2006

Released in 2006, A Matter of Life and Death repeatedly explores war, religion, violence and their consequences. Although not a concept album, these recurring themes give the record a particularly cohesive identity.

Its first single, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, was released in August 2006. Iron Maiden chose a dark and atmospheric track running for more than seven minutes rather than selecting a shorter song specifically suited to radio.

The album also achieved a career first for the band, reaching No. 9 on the US Billboard 200 and giving Iron Maiden their first American Top 10 album.

The visual world of A Matter of Life and Death was created by American illustrator Tim Bradstreet, known in particular for his work on Hellblazer and The Punisher comics.

For the album cover, Bradstreet depicted Eddie commanding an army of skeletal soldiers from a tank. The emblem featured on this flag — a helmeted Eddie above two crossed rifles — appears on the front of that vehicle.
