The First Ten Years: a decade of Iron Maiden singles

In 1990, Iron Maiden celebrated ten years of recording history with The First Ten Years, a series devoted to the singles released by the band since 1980.

Between February and April 1990, ten volumes were released at a rate of one per week. Each combined two singles with their original B-sides and an episode of Listen With Nicko!, featuring drummer Nicko McBrain recounting stories about the songs in his characteristic humorous style.

The series revisited many of the singles that defined Iron Maiden's first decade, including Running Free, Sanctuary, Run to the Hills, The Number of the Beast, The Trooper, Aces High, Wasted Years, Can I Play with Madness and The Evil That Men Do.

Eddie takes over the courtroom

The artwork turns the tenth-anniversary theme into a typically Maiden visual joke. Sitting behind his desk, Eddie wears the traditional outfit of a British judge and raises his gavel over a chained audience.

The idea works on two levels: ten years of Iron Maiden become a ten-year sentence handed down by Judge Eddie.

Did you know?

Each of the ten The First Ten Years releases included a special voucher. Fans who collected all ten could send them away to receive a special storage box designed to hold the complete series.

Iron Maiden effectively turned the anniversary retrospective into a collection that fans could complete week by week.
