The Rolling Stones Tongue & Lips

The red mouth, open lips and protruding tongue appear alone, without the band's name or any additional artwork. This gives the Tongue & Lips centre stage, a symbol distinctive enough to represent The Rolling Stones on its own.

The logo's red, white and black colours stand out sharply against the black case in a deliberately simple and instantly readable design.

A logo created by John Pasche

The Tongue & Lips was created in 1970 by John Pasche, then a student at London's Royal College of Art. Mick Jagger was looking for a new visual identity for The Rolling Stones and commissioned Pasche to create an emblem for the band.

Pasche drew inspiration from Jagger's mouth and imagery associated with the Hindu goddess Kali. The result perfectly matched the Stones' provocative attitude: an open mouth and protruding tongue, without even needing the band's name.

From Sticky Fingers to a rock icon

The logo made its major public debut in 1971 with Sticky Fingers. It went on to accompany The Rolling Stones for more than half a century across records, posters, stages and merchandise.

Few bands have an emblem that can be recognised without their name: the Tongue & Lips has become a visual signature of The Rolling Stones.
