Released in January 1980, Permanent Waves is Rush's seventh studio album. With The Spirit of Radio and Freewill, the Canadian trio began favouring shorter songs while retaining the progressive compositions that had become their trademark, including Jacob's Ladder and Natural Science.

The album was recorded at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, which would also host artists including David Bowie, The Police, the Bee Gees and Bryan Adams.

🌊 An album cover built around “waves”

The sleeve was created by longtime Rush collaborator Hugh Syme. Its background uses a photograph taken by Flip Schulke in Galveston, Texas, following Hurricane Carla in September 1961. In the foreground, Canadian model Paula Turnbull walks through the scene with her skirt blowing in the wind.

At her feet is a newspaper carrying the famously incorrect “Dewey Defeats Truman” headline published by the Chicago Daily Tribune following the 1948 US presidential election. Syme combines different eras and different forms of “waves” — water, wind and media — around the title Permanent Waves.
