Crack the Skye is the fourth studio album by Mastodon, released in March 2009. Combining astral travel, Tsarist Russia and Rasputin, it remains one of the band's most ambitious concept albums.

This 500-piece Mastodon puzzle recreates the cover artwork by Paul Romano, the artist behind the visuals of Mastodon's first four albums. 🧩

From Astral Travel to Rasputin

The story of Crack the Skye follows a young man who leaves his body through astral projection. After travelling too close to the Sun and severing the connection to his physical body, his spirit passes through a wormhole and reaches Tsarist Russia, where his fate eventually becomes intertwined with Grigori Rasputin.

Behind the fantastic narrative lies a much more personal dimension. Drummer and principal lyricist Brann Dailor explained that the title also refers to his sister Skye, who died when they were teenagers. The album gave him an opportunity to address that period of his life directly in his lyrics.

Paul Romano's Final Mastodon Album Cover

To translate the album's world into images, Paul Romano researched Russian art and imagery. The resulting cover is an intricate composition dominated by green, red, blue and gold, centred around a multicoloured disc and two opposing figures.

Did you know? Far more work went into the cover than the final image reveals. Romano recalled exchanging numerous ideas with the band and keeping half a flat-file drawer filled with concepts that never made the cut. Crack the Skye ultimately became his final Mastodon album cover before the band began exploring collaborations with other artists.
