Mastodon – Blood Mountain 500-Piece Puzzle

Blood Mountain is the third studio album by Mastodon, released in September 2006. Following Leviathan, the band created another concept album, this time built around a fantastic quest through a mountain inhabited by imaginary creatures.

This 500-piece Mastodon puzzle recreates the remarkably detailed Blood Mountain album cover created by American artist Paul Romano. 🧩

Artwork at the Heart of the Blood Mountain Story

The album follows a character climbing Blood Mountain in search of a crystal skull. His journey introduces a series of fantastic creatures referenced throughout the songs, including the Cysquatch from Circle of Cysquatch and the creatures of Colony of Birchmen.

There is another dimension to the story. Brent Hinds explained that the mountain also serves as a metaphor for the struggles and goals people attempt to overcome in their lives, combined with the band's fascination with fantasy and mythological creatures.

The cover extends this world visually. Long-time Mastodon collaborator Paul Romano created a highly detailed large-scale painting for Blood Mountain, dominated by a multi-headed blue creature and an intense palette of blue, red and orange.

Did you know? The familiar album artwork is actually only part of a much larger work. Paul Romano revealed that he created a large painting specifically for Blood Mountain, but only sections of it were used in the album packaging. Years later, he said that he had still never publicly shown the complete painting.

Made by Zee Productions for the Rock Saws collection, this officially licensed puzzle recreates the artwork in 500 pieces, with a completed size of 39 × 39 cm.
