Joy Division Wallet – Unknown Pleasures

This Joy Division wallet features one of the most famous images in post-punk history: the stark black and white artwork associated with Unknown Pleasures, the band's debut album released in 1979. The distinctive white lines appear against a black background, accompanied by the words “Joy Division” and “Unknown Pleasures”.

What do the Unknown Pleasures lines represent?

The famous image isn't a mountain or simply a series of sound waves. It originates from a graphic representation of the radio pulses of pulsar CP 1919, now known as PSR B1919+21. The original scientific image was notably reproduced in The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy.

For the Unknown Pleasures sleeve, Peter Saville and Joy Division used the image with its appearance reversed, placing the white lines against a completely black background. The stark design became inseparable from the album and one of the most recognisable pieces of artwork associated with Factory Records.
