The iconic Unknown Pleasures artwork

Official Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures sew-on patch – 10 × 10 cm

⚫ This official Joy Division sew-on patch reproduces the artwork from Unknown Pleasures, the band's groundbreaking 1979 debut album. Its famous white waveform design on a black background has become one of the most recognisable images in modern music history, extending far beyond the world of post-punk.

The embroidery faithfully recreates Peter Saville's minimalist composition, featuring the Joy Division logo, the album title and the iconic central graphic.

A landmark post-punk album 🎵

Released in 1979, Unknown Pleasures introduced Joy Division's distinctive sound to the world. Driven by the haunting vocals of Ian Curtis and the band's atmospheric songwriting, the album is widely regarded as one of the defining records of the post-punk movement.

An artwork inspired by astronomy 🔍

Despite common belief, the central image does not depict mountains or sound waves. It is a visual representation of radio pulses emitted by the pulsar CP 1919, taken from a scientific publication. Peter Saville transformed this astronomical data into one of the most influential album covers ever created.

💡 Did you know?

The original graphic was based on data published after the discovery of the first pulsar by astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell in 1967. Today, the Unknown Pleasures cover is one of the most referenced and reinterpreted designs in graphic design and popular culture.
