Kill 'Em All – the beginning of Metallica

Released in 1983, Kill 'Em All was Metallica's debut studio album. Its cover features a hammer beside a hand and a pool of blood beneath the band's red logo. The album includes tracks such as Hit the Lights, Whiplash, Seek & Destroy and Cliff Burton's bass solo (Anesthesia) – Pulling Teeth.

The album was originally intended to be called Metal Up Your Ass. After that title was abandoned, Metallica chose Kill 'Em All, a phrase attributed to Cliff Burton following the difficulties surrounding the original title.

Ride the Lightning – Metallica moves forward

One year later, Ride the Lightning marked a major development in the band's songwriting. Released in 1984, Metallica's second album includes For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Creeping Death and Ride the Lightning.

The second slipmat reproduces its famous blue artwork: an electric chair surrounded by lightning beneath the Metallica logo. The title Ride the Lightning refers to an expression for execution in the electric chair.

Two historic Metallica albums on your turntable

Together, the two designs represent the opening chapters of Metallica's discography: Kill 'Em All in 1983 followed by Ride the Lightning in 1984.
