Tres Hombres, the album that changed everything for ZZ Top

Released on 26 July 1973, Tres Hombres was ZZ Top's third studio album, following ZZ Top's First Album and Rio Grande Mud. It became the trio's commercial breakthrough in the United States, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard 200.

Its ten tracks include Waitin' for the Bus, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers and, most famously, La Grange, which became ZZ Top's first song to reach the US Top 50.

“Tres Hombres”: three men

Tres Hombres simply means “three men” in Spanish. It proved a fitting title for a band built around the same three musicians since 1969: Billy Gibbons on guitar and vocals, Dusty Hill on bass and vocals, and Frank Beard on drums.

The artwork on this patch plays directly on the album title by placing the three musicians side by side, each in his own frame.

💡 Did you know?

The original Tres Hombres gatefold is almost as memorable as the music: it features an enormous spread of Tex-Mex food from Leo's Mexican Restaurant in Houston. Billy Gibbons later recalled that the restaurant's usual $2.99 Mexican dinner was considerably expanded for the photo shoot.
