Eliminator, the 1983 turning point

Released on 23 March 1983, Eliminator is ZZ Top's eighth studio album. The trio pushed their blues-rock foundation into new territory with a much greater use of synthesisers, sequencers and electronic rhythms, developing ideas already explored on 1981's El Loco.

The album includes Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man and Legs. Certified Diamond in the United States for sales exceeding ten million copies, Eliminator became ZZ Top's biggest-selling album.

Billy Gibbons' 1933 Ford Coupe

The car on the cover wasn't created purely for the album artwork: it was Billy Gibbons' own hot rod, based on a 1933 Ford Coupe. An illustration of the car dominates the Eliminator sleeve and became an instantly recognisable part of the album's visual identity.

The title Eliminator comes from drag-racing terminology: an “eliminator” is the vehicle that wins its class by progressing through elimination rounds.

From the album cover to MTV 📺

The Ford then moved from the sleeve to the videos for Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man and Legs, all directed by Tim Newman. Beginning with Gimme All Your Lovin', the three videos share a visual world built around the car, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard, and the three mysterious women who accompany the Eliminator.

The trilogy became a fixture on MTV, permanently linking the red Ford with ZZ Top's 1980s image.
