2Pac Cross: Tupac's tattoo reworked as a patch

This 2Pac Cross patch draws on the distinctive shape of the large cross Tupac Shakur had tattooed across his back. On this version, the original Exodus 1831 inscription is replaced by the name Tupac, embroidered in white at the centre.

Set against black, the double white outline emphasizes the shape of the cross and gives the design a particularly clear graphic appearance. Measuring 7 x 9 cm, its cut-out construction retains the tall proportions and striking silhouette of the design that inspired it.

The story behind the “Exodus 1831” cross

The reference has particular significance for those familiar with 2Pac's tattoos. Tupac's original back cross featured the words “Exodus 1831”. Despite a sometimes repeated interpretation, this is not a reference to the Biblical verse Exodus 18:31: chapter 18 of Exodus contains only 27 verses.

The year 1831 connects the tattoo to Nat Turner, who led a slave rebellion in Virginia that year. Tupac himself discussed reading The Confessions of Nat Turner while in prison and associated “Exodus” with departure and his own desire to escape from a society he no longer felt part of. The cross therefore carried considerably more significance for Tupac than a purely decorative design.

A design rooted in 2Pac iconography

The famous cross was created by tattoo artist Dennis “Dago” Coelho, who is also associated with several of Tupac's best-known tattoos. This patch adapts that imagery for official merchandise: the distinctive cross remains, while Exodus 1831 is replaced by the Tupac name.

A more subtle 2Pac reference than the classic THUG LIFE design, and one with a particularly interesting story behind it.
