Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?: Vic Rattlehead among the ruins

Official Megadeth Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? sew-on patch – 8 × 8 cm

This official Megadeth sew-on patch features the artwork from Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, the band's second album, released in 1986. Against an apocalyptic red landscape, Vic Rattlehead stands in front of the ruined United Nations headquarters, with military aircraft crossing the sky above.

The design retains the defining elements of the album cover, with the Megadeth logo across the top and Vic in the foreground.

Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, a thrash metal landmark

Released in September 1986, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? marked a major step in Megadeth's career. Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson delivered an intensely technical, fast and aggressive form of thrash metal.

The album includes tracks such as Wake Up Dead, The Conjuring, Devils Island and, of course, Peace Sells, whose opening bass line became one of the most instantly recognisable passages in the band's catalogue.

Ed Repka gives Vic Rattlehead his iconic appearance

The cover of Peace Sells... but Who's Buying? was created by American artist Ed Repka. Vic Rattlehead had already appeared on Megadeth's debut Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!, but Repka gave the mascot the detailed appearance that would become inseparable from Megadeth's visual identity.

Vic is depicted as a real-estate agent standing in front of the devastated United Nations headquarters in New York following a nuclear attack, with a “For Sale” sign planted among the ruins. The scene provides a visual counterpart to the album's ironic title: Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?.

💡 Did you know?

The opening bass line from Peace Sells reached far beyond the metal audience: MTV used it for several years as part of the MTV News intro. A few seconds of David Ellefson's bass playing consequently became familiar to an entire generation of television viewers.
