Iron Maiden Flag – Killers

This Iron Maiden – Killers flag features Eddie in his incarnation from the band's second album: wild white hair, a menacing expression and a blood-covered axe in his hand. Here, the mascot appears against a black background repeatedly covered with the word “Killers”, beneath the red and grey Iron Maiden logo.

The artwork is directly inspired by the Eddie created by Derek Riggs for the Killers album cover, one of his best-known early Iron Maiden designs.

Killers: Iron Maiden in 1981

Released on 2 February 1981, Killers is Iron Maiden's second studio album. Its track list includes Wrathchild, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Purgatory and the title track Killers.

The album marked several important changes in the band's history: Adrian Smith made his first studio album appearance as guitarist, while it became the final Iron Maiden studio album to feature Paul Di'Anno on vocals.

Killers also began Iron Maiden's long collaboration with producer Martin Birch, who would continue working on the band's albums through to Fear of the Dark in 1992.

Eddie becomes a Killer

For the original album cover, Derek Riggs placed Eddie in a London street with a blood-covered axe in his hand. At the bottom of the artwork, the hands of his victim can still be seen clutching his clothing.

The flag uses this murderous incarnation of Eddie in a different composition: a close-up of the mascot and his axe, blood-red details and the word “Killers” repeated across the black background.

Did you know?

Killers has another strong connection to Iron Maiden's early years: much of its material had already been written before the band's debut album was recorded. It is also the only Iron Maiden studio album to feature two instrumentals, The Ides of March and Genghis Khan.
