Meliora is the third studio album by Ghost, released on 21 August 2015. With Papa Emeritus III leading the Clergy, the album marked a major step in the Swedish band's career and includes Cirice, From the Pinnacle to the Pit and He Is.

An Album Cover Inspired by Metropolis

The artwork depicts an immense city of monumental architecture dominated by a structure forming the face of Papa Emeritus. In the foreground, a tiny crowd converges towards the illuminated heart of the city while the Ghost logo towers above the scene.

For the composition, Zbigniew M. Bielak drew inspiration from the famous poster for Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis, created by German artist Heinz Schulz-Neudamm. The towering city and monumental architecture directly reference this science-fiction classic.

The Metropolis reference also fits the concept behind Meliora, whose world imagines a modern, futuristic society in which God is absent. This artistic direction can be found throughout Bielak's imagery created for the album.

Did you know? In 2016, Cirice won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, giving Ghost their first Grammy Award.
