Sepultura's Tribal S: a symbol born during the Arise era 🪓

Official Sepultura Tribal S sew-on patch – 8 × 10 cm

This official Sepultura sew-on patch combines the band's name with its famous Tribal S. The grey symbol fills the height of the black background, with SEPULTURA running horizontally across its centre.

A symbol created for Sepultura in the early 1990s

Shortly before the release of Arise in 1991, Sepultura approached Bozó, a tattoo artist from Belo Horizonte, to create a tribal symbol for the band. Working from the initial S, he developed it into a twisting construction of shapes resembling vertebrae and thorns.

The Tribal S went on to represent Sepultura independently of the band's name and became one of their most recognisable graphic marks.

From Arise to Roots

The symbol remained part of Sepultura's imagery through several major periods of their career. It appeared within the visual world of Chaos A.D. and later on Roots in 1996, where Michael Whelan incorporated it into the pendant worn by the figure on the album cover.

This patch brings that historic symbol together with the Sepultura name in a monochrome grey design.

The Tribal S was originally commissioned for the inside of the Arise CD. What began as an additional piece of artwork ultimately developed into a symbol that accompanied Sepultura for decades.
