Negative Creep: a ferocious track from Nirvana's early years

Official Nirvana Negative Creep iron-on patch – 10 x 5 cm

This official Nirvana iron-on patch combines the band's name with Negative Creep, a track from Bleach. Against a black background, the NIRVANA logo appears in yellow alongside the famous Smiley, while NEGATIVE CREEP is written underneath in white and yellow.

With its 10 x 5 cm rectangular format and instantly recognisable graphics, the patch brings together two strong elements of Nirvana imagery: one of the band's best-known logos and a song directly associated with the Bleach era.

Negative Creep, recorded before the release of Bleach

Negative Creep was recorded during the Bleach sessions at Reciprocal Recording Studios in Seattle with producer Jack Endino. Released by Sub Pop in June 1989, Bleach became Nirvana's debut studio album.

The track stands out for its particularly direct structure, heavy repetitive riff and Kurt Cobain's intense vocal performance. Negative Creep is the seventh track on the album and opens the second side of the original vinyl release.

An unexpected connection with Mudhoney

The ending of Negative Creep contains a nod to another essential Seattle band. Kurt Cobain uses the phrase “Daddy's little girl”, referencing Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More by Mudhoney, released in 1988.

This detail places Negative Creep firmly within the late-1980s Pacific Northwest alternative scene, when Nirvana and Mudhoney were among the bands associated with the emerging Sub Pop label.

From the Smiley to Negative Creep

The patch combines imagery from two different periods of the band's history. Negative Creep belongs to Bleach and therefore Nirvana's earliest recorded era, while the famous Nirvana Smiley appeared later in the band's history, in the early 1990s.

This is therefore not a reproduction of original Bleach artwork, but a merchandise design combining several references immediately associated with Nirvana.
