Misfits and the birth of horror punk

Formed in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey, around Glenn Danzig, Misfits quickly developed an identity combining punk rock with horror and science-fiction imagery, macabre aesthetics and remarkably catchy melodies.

Songs including Last Caress, Where Eagles Dare, Die, Die My Darling and Halloween, together with albums such as Walk Among Us and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood, helped establish the band as a major reference in horror punk.

A logo in addition to the Crimson Ghost

The Misfits' visual identity is built around several famous elements. The distinctive band lettering reproduced on this patch is one of them. The Crimson Ghost, the skeletal face frequently associated with the Misfits, is another.

The latter was not originally created for the band. It comes from The Crimson Ghost, an American movie serial released in 1946. The Misfits adopted the character's image in the late 1970s, eventually turning it into one of the most recognisable symbols associated with the band.

💡 Did you know?

The name Misfits itself has a connection to cinema. Glenn Danzig chose it in reference to The Misfits (1961), John Huston's film starring Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift. It was the final completed film for both Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. Cinema was therefore embedded in the band's identity even before the Crimson Ghost appeared.
