Chinese Democracy, an album with an extraordinary history

Released in 2008, Chinese Democracy was the first Guns N' Roses album of original material since Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II in 1991. In the intervening years, the line-up responsible for the band's rise to fame had changed dramatically.

By the time the album was released, Axl Rose was the only remaining member of the classic line-up. Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and the other musicians associated with the band's most famous years had departed, while a long succession of guitarists, bassists, drummers and producers became involved in the project during its development.

A production history almost as famous as the album itself

Work on Chinese Democracy stretched across many years, involving numerous changes in musicians, producers and recording sessions. Guitarists who contributed to the finished album include Buckethead, Robin Finck and Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal.

This turbulent history resulted in a record that sometimes moved away from the hard rock sound of early Guns N' Roses, incorporating denser arrangements, electronic treatments and industrial influences. Chinese Democracy opens the album, which also includes Better, Street of Dreams, There Was a Time and This I Love.
